Houston is home to world class art, and some funkier unique to Houston museums & destinations. The Museum of FIne Arts, Houston is extraordinary, but it can be a little overwhelming. Here are some other highlights if you're not up for the big museum!

BEER CAN HOUSE

It's a house made entirely of beer cans! Worth driving by just to see it if you're out exploring – you can also go inside for the full experience for $5. 

 

THE ORANGE SHOW

Funky and fabulous! A retired mail carrier transformed his old house into a magnificent tribute to his favorite fruit (the orange!) using all found and recycled objects.

 

THE MENIL COLLECTION

Home to a fabulous collection of classic and contemporary art + beautiful grounds! Admission is free!

 

ROTHKO CHAPEL

If you appreciate contemporary art, the Rothko Chapel is a must visit. It's a non-denominational chapel and a major work of modern art with 14 huge Rothko panels. 

 

CONTEMPORARY ARTS MUSEUM HOUSTON

The CAM boasts free entry and they always have something interesting going on! Its small footprint also ensures you can see everything quickly and don't get overwhelmed by museum fatigue. Pop across the street and walk through the MFAH sculpture garden after!

 

SKYSPACE.

James Turrell's experiential art exhibit, Sykspace is best experienced at sunrise or sunset! Moody & meditative, it's remarkable to watch the light sequences!
